|Upsilon Omega Chapter steps forward during Ferguson unrest
The photos were taken Aug. 25 at the Omega Center in St. Louis, following the funeral of 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was shot and killed weeks earlier by a police officer in Ferguson, Mo.
Eighth District Representative Brother W. Ray Brown offered words of comfort and encouragement to Brown's father, Michael Brown Sr. The members of Upsilon Omega donated the Omega Center for the Brown family to have its repast following the services.
Since the onset of the protest and civic unrest following the shooting, Upsilon Omega members have played a vital role in helping bring calm and civility to the embattled Ferguson community.
Immediate Past Eighth District Representative Brother Robert C. Scott worked diligently behind the scenes with Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon and others. Authorities soon removed the military vehicles that were used during the protest. Brother Scott also was instrumental in convincing city and state officials to guaranteed residents of the nearby Canfield Greens community gain immediate access to municipal services such as police, fire and emergency medical services.
Brother Scott was among the clergy and community activists pushing to have St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCullough to recuse himself from investigating the shooting. The group cited past conflicts involving McCullough and asked Gov. Nixon to appoint a special prosecutor.
